Older years undercount. The register only holds companies that still exist. Anything formed in an earlier year and since dissolved has dropped off it, so the further back the chart goes the more it undercounts. That alone makes every trade look like it is growing. Some of the rise here is real growth and some of it is simply that recent companies have had less time to close. The long view of UK company formation works through it in full, across all 39 trades.

Every town with a page of its own for new legal companies: 4 of them, covering 27% of the UK total for the trade. The rest are spread thinly across towns too small to count reliably.

Towns come from the post town on the registered office address, except where that office is a formation agent: those companies are counted in the town established from their directors' other companies, or not counted at all. A town needs at least 30 new legal companies in twelve months before it gets a page, so the rows above do not add up to the national total. How towns are worked out.
